Causes of Hair Loss in Men

There are several causes of hair loss in men. Each man is unique, and so is the cause of his hair loss. Below are the most common factors that contribute to hair loss.

1. Genetics

Genes play a role in how likely you are to experience hair loss. If you have a history of hair loss in your family, then the chances are greater that you will experience a hereditary type of hair loss known as male-pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia), which is the most common type of hair loss. Studies show that male-pattern baldness affects around half of all men by the time they are 50 years of age.

2. Hormonal Changes

Changes in hormones can contribute to hair loss and thinning in men. The most common hormone to do so is DHT (dihydrotestosterone), a byproduct of testosterone. However, other hormones, including those caused by stress, can also cause a hormonal imbalance and result in hair loss.

3. Diet

Your body needs certain nutrients such as protein, iron, vitamins, and minerals to grow healthy hair. A diet lacking these essential nutrients prevents your follicles from being able to produce healthy hair strands. Instead, the hair may be slow growing, or there may not be any growth at all, leading to hair loss. Eating a well-balanced diet helps ensure your body receives the nutrients it needs.

4. Lifestyle

Certain lifestyle factors can significantly impact hair loss. Stress, for example, can trigger a hair loss condition called telogen effluvium. This causes strands of hair to release prematurely from the scalp, leading to excessive shedding. Other lifestyle factors that can lead to hair loss include lack of sleep, alcohol consumption, and smoking.

5. Medical Conditions

Certain medical conditions, such as autoimmune diseases, skin disorders, and thyroid disorders, can cause thinning or balding.

6. Medications

Along the same lines as medical conditions, some of the medications used to treat them can also lead to hair loss. These include cancer treatments, high blood pressure medications, and depression treatments, just to name a few. Typically, hair loss resulting from medication use is temporary, and your normal hair will begin to grow again once the medication is stopped.

7. Environmental Factors

Environmental factors such as excessive exposure to UV rays, pollution, and harsh chemicals can hair proteins and lead to brittle hair that breaks off prematurely and leaves thinning and bald spots. Other environmental factors, such as excessive dryness, can also lead to brittle hair. Be sure to protect your hair as needed when going outside.
